Yesterday, I was waxing nolstalgic for 2008 because that’s when Obama represented all that hope and change. And that was amazing, inspiring and a night I’ll tell my grandkids about, for sure.
But you guys, last night.
Last night, we ALL brought the hope and the change. And, some might say, a whole binder full of women. Let’s go to the highlights reel, shall we?
- Women, minorities and young people all voted in record numbers. (One of us even voted while she was going into labor.) #oldwhitemenyourturnisover
- Half-Thai, double-amputee war hero Tammy Duckworth sent the Tea Party home in Illinois. #seeabove
- Claire McCaskill shut down Todd Akin. So legitimate.
- Wisconsin elected our first openly gay senator, Tammy Baldwin. (And she’s the first female senator from her state, yo.)
- Elizabeth Warren beat Scott Brown, might seriously be the smartest person we’ve ever elected to hold public office. #Warren2016
- Governor. Senate. House. The state of New Hampshire is now entirely led by women.
- In case you lost count, all of this also means we now have more women in the United States Senate than ever before.
- Gay marriage legalized in Maryland, Maine and Washington — and a same-sex marriage ban defeated in Minnesota.
War on Women: Victory, us.
PS. In full disclosure: Diane Sawyer was drunk and Michelle Bachmann is back. Look, we can’t win ’em all.

An old lady feminist, I watched results with relief + satisfaction. Remembered sitting in high school auditorium at women’s community event as Barbara Mikulski walked by–she was on Baltimore’s City Council then–jumping up to say, “Barbara!” Standing in a motel ballroom listing to Geraldine Ferraro speak as she ran for vice president. And picketing the Baltimore Sun for refusal to stop running male/female ads under separate columns…and so much more… the Choice marches in D.C. Hoping the 21st offers you and my grandchildren a more equitable playing field.
