The Pretty Price Check: Your Friday round-up of what we paid for beauty last week.
Happy 2011! We’ve all been off holiday-ing, so hows about we do a little Price Checking, so I can slog through my Google Reader and you can find out what you’ve been missing over the past two weeks, out there in the Wide World O’ Beauty?
- 23 years: How long Ginnifer Goodwin has been on Weight Watchers, working to maintain her “happy number.” And yet she still hates how she looks in a swimsuit. Which proves for the nine millionth time why diets miss the fricking point: All that point counting and no pay-off make Ginnifer a very sad girl. (Via CNN)
- 804 percent: How much the frequency of bariatric surgery increased between 1998 and 2004. And it now costs around $30,000. (Via Jezebel)
- 12: The age of acting wunderkind Ella Fanning (yes, Dakota’s little sister), the fashion industry’s new It Girl. Yes, she’s cute as a button and crazy talented, but I have to agree with DoubleX’s Jessica Grose on this one: “…seeing a tween elevated to fashion icon before she’s fully gone through puberty while a famous woman [Christina Hendricks] with curves can’t even find a dress is pretty appalling.” (Via The Hairpin)
- 18.1 percent of women still use tanning beds regularly. And I’d give you a lecture about skin cancer except it’s January, which means it’s constantly cold and dark and I do so desperately understand the need to bake. Except still: Skin Cancer. And wrinkles. Whatever frightens you more. (Via BellaSugar)
Which is a lot of downer news, so here’s something funner: Beauty Counter has a great round-up of all the awesome indie beauty products you can now find on Etsy. Handmade, sustainable products enjoying well-deserved cult followings, whee!
And I’m also excited to give you a little teaser of the next big (okay, medium-sized, and, thankfully, school-free) project happening here on Beauty Schooled by asking: Could you survive 30 days wearing just six items or less?
Because starting January 10, I’m a-gonna find out. Which, as anyone who has seen my closet (if you haven’t, don’t worry, that will include you later this week) knows, is ummm, a little daunting. Hey! You should so go sign up and join me!
