The Pretty Price Check: Your Friday round-up of what we paid for beauty last week.
Happy 2011! We’ve all been off holiday-ing, so hows about we do a little Price Checking, so I can slog through my Google Reader and you can find out what you’ve been missing over the past two weeks, out there in the Wide World O’ Beauty?
- 23 years: How long Ginnifer Goodwin has been on Weight Watchers, working to maintain her “happy number.” And yet she still hates how she looks in a swimsuit. Which proves for the nine millionth time why diets miss the fricking point: All that point counting and no pay-off make Ginnifer a very sad girl. (Via CNN)
- 804 percent: How much the frequency of bariatric surgery increased between 1998 and 2004. And it now costs around $30,000. (Via Jezebel)
- 12: The age of acting wunderkind Ella Fanning (yes, Dakota’s little sister), the fashion industry’s new It Girl. Yes, she’s cute as a button and crazy talented, but I have to agree with DoubleX’s Jessica Grose on this one: “…seeing a tween elevated to fashion icon before she’s fully gone through puberty while a famous woman [Christina Hendricks] with curves can’t even find a dress is pretty appalling.” (Via The Hairpin)
- 18.1 percent of women still use tanning beds regularly. And I’d give you a lecture about skin cancer except it’s January, which means it’s constantly cold and dark and I do so desperately understand the need to bake. Except still: Skin Cancer. And wrinkles. Whatever frightens you more. (Via BellaSugar)
Which is a lot of downer news, so here’s something funner: Beauty Counter has a great round-up of all the awesome indie beauty products you can now find on Etsy. Handmade, sustainable products enjoying well-deserved cult followings, whee!
And I’m also excited to give you a little teaser of the next big (okay, medium-sized, and, thankfully, school-free) project happening here on Beauty Schooled by asking: Could you survive 30 days wearing just six items or less?
Because starting January 10, I’m a-gonna find out. Which, as anyone who has seen my closet (if you haven’t, don’t worry, that will include you later this week) knows, is ummm, a little daunting. Hey! You should so go sign up and join me!

Whew…..and I thought you had left us for good!!! It was so nice to see your
“pretty price check” show up on my computer! I am really looking forward to
your experience wearing only six pieces of clothes for 30 days….wow…can you do it? Most of my clothes are either black, white or gray so what am I even talking about! I should challenge myself to wear any OTHER color for 30 days!
Welcome back and a happy and healthy new year, too!
Thanks Anne! And do not worry, Beauty Schooled isn’t going anywhere — I was just on a little holiday hiatus.
I’ve thought about doing the 30 for 30, but frankly, am just too lazy to do the preparation (thinking about and carefully choosing good items). I can’t even imagine only 6 items for a month, and I’m excited to see what you’ve got to report on it!
Also, I tried apple cider vinegar instead of conditioner the other day (you mentioned doing it a few weeks ago), and HOLY SHIT it made my hair amazing! Kinda nice to be able to do that without chemicals…
Hooray! Apple cider vinegar is the best. Once the smell goes away. I found I did still need some conditioner on the ends of my hair to detangle them, so now I do apple cider vinegar on my scalp/roots and conditioner at the ends, and it seriously has cut down on A) how fast I run through my conditioner and B) build-up/need for other styling products. Yippee!
Wow, I’m intrigued by this “6 items for 30 days” thing.
I was confused for a bit, but then i poked around the link and found…
Whew! That’s more reasonable. By the time I have by underpants, bra, and socks on, I’m 2/3 there and I’m not even dressed! I play soccer 2-3 times per week, and one game requires exactly six items, so that would be a challenge. Winter bike commuting in the rain – special shoes and outerwear layers mandatory. Hot yoga – please tell me I can do laundry!
Even just thinking all that through made me think about how much I have to change clothes/deal with clothes/”gear up.” Exhausting.
Oh my gosh. I can’t remember how to blockquote, apparently. What that was supposed to say was that i poked around the link and found this QUOTE:
“We’re really interested in looking at the clothes that we use to define us. Therefore there are exceptions to your six: undergarments, shoes, socks, accessories, workout clothes, pajamas, outerwear and work uniforms (dictated and issued by your employer) do not count towards your six.”
I read an article that said the best way to convince women not to go tanning is to tell them it will make them ugly. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not.
And, um, only six items in one month? I admire/envy how much spare time it takes to do that, since I barely have time to throw a single load in the washer once a month.
