In case you’re one of those people who comes up to me at parties* and says “How on earth do you come up with stuff to blog about five days a week?!” This post was fully inspired by a press release about National Pilates Day that landed in my editor’s inbox last week. (NPD is Saturday — like you haven’t been counting down.) Sometimes that’s how the (body image) sausage gets made. Plus there’s a lot of big stuff in the news this week. You’re already overwhelmed. And still processing the Royal Wedding, too. I’m here to take the edge off.
Also pilates really does rock. Here’s why. I like yoga even better, but it doesn’t have a holiday this week.
PS. On second reading, I am worried that this post makes me sound super anti-gym. Oh well. I am pretty anti-gym because they are everything I hate about shopping malls with none of the cute clothes or Mrs. Fields cookies. But if going to the gym makes you looove your body for everything it can do, then I don’t want to rain on that parade. Carry on.
*So like, all three of you.
Sing it sister! Next you have to write about the deep profound joys of the pelvic floor……
Oh it’s coming. Just get me a pelvic-floor-based holiday and I’m all over that sh*t. (And I totally linked to Shambhala in the iVillage post for you, too!) xo
I find pilates downright boring but I agree with you that certain types of exercise really can make you feel better about your body and what it is capable of. That could mean pilates or for some people it may be the elliptical (though in my opinion if pilates is boring then the elliptical is mind numbing). For me it’s yoga which really allows me to focus on my capabilities and weight lifting which makes me feel more powerful than anything else I can do

Well I differ in opinion i happen to love pilates. I am a practioner of both pilates and yoga. Pilates helps with alignment creating long limbs and like yoga is a weight bearing exercise…both focus on the mind, body and spirit. Yoga helps with flexibility…both are similar. Pilates is a bit more complex with the moves, some of the lingo and props. Yoga is suitable for all fitness levels as is Pilates. With the right instructor Pilates is anything but boring. I have learnt more about my body through Pilates than any other exercise.
