[Never Say Diet] Why I’m Still Really Proud About Jennifer Hudson’s Oscar

iVillage Never Say Diet Virginia Sole-Smith Jennifer Hudson

Too bad she doesn’t seem to feel the same way.

Unrelated: Lovelies, per my plan to take it easy this summer (which sort of worked out! Until it got totally consumed by work… whoops) I’m taking a little hiatus so I can go drag the most out of the end of my favorite season.

So you’ll have a substitute in the Never Say Diet driver’s seat and a wee bit o’ radio silence here in Beauty Schooled land for the next two weeks. If you miss me I suggest you watch this excellent Clueless wardrobe montage. Not because I look anything like Alicia Silverstone. But we do have nearly the same amount of shoes.

Pretty Price Check [04.01.11]

The Pretty Price Check: Your Friday round-up of what we paid for beauty last week.

  • $72: What you’ll pay for this insane night bra, which separates and moisturizes your cleavage to prevent wrinkles. You know I couldn’t not include this. (Via The Hairpin)
  • 29: The age when most women start to feel old, according to a new survey. Of course, men don’t feel old until they’re 58. As someone who is just 30 days away from not being 29 ever again, I call bullsh*t on this whole thing. (Via MyDaily)

Pretty Price Check (02.11.11)

The Pretty Price Check: Your Friday round-up of what we paid for beauty last week.

OB Tampons

  • $39 is what you’ll pay for a box of the suddenly scarce OB tampons on the black market (otherwise known as Amazon). Ladies (especially you, Kate) I’ve got six OB tampons left in my bathroom cabinet and I accept all forms of payment including cash, J. Crew gift cards, and trips to the beach. (via MyDaily)
  • 67 women exhibited less proficiency at math after being looked at as sexual objects, according to this new study. The math abilities of the 83 men in the study were not impacted. (via The Hairpin)
  • No! No! Hair 8800 is the ridiculous name of this DIY hair removal device, voted At-Home Beauty Treatment of the Year by 50,000 consumers in an industry-sponsored survey. I hope everyone pronounces its name with an appropriate level of exclamation-point-indicated excitement. Or is it horror? (via GCI)

A short (but to the point!) Price Check this week, so I’m hoping y’all will stick around for another minute or two and take this quick poll about what you’d like to see less/more/most of here on Beauty Schooled. Read more…

Pretty Price Check (02.04.11)

The Pretty Price Check: Your Friday round-up of what we paid for beauty last week.

  • 95 percent of women carry mascara in their purses, according to yet another super reliable survey. I would be the other five percent. Except last week when I was carrying around my friend Katherine’s mascara so I could give it back after she left it my house. Probably not what they meant. (Via TheHairpin.)
  • Over 80 companies — including big girl brands like L’Oreal, Avon and Revlon! — are on a special FDA watch list because the agency believes they may be importing, manufacturing or shipping skin care creams that make “drug claims,” like that said skin cream can alter the structure or function of your body (cellulite and wrinkle erasers, anyone?) or treat or prevent disease. This is a violation of pretty much the only cosmetics law we have in this country. And the beauty industry can’t even follow that one. (Via La Times)

  • $180: The price of this bird poop facial, available only in New York and London. Or anywhere else with a healthy pigeon population, for you DIY lovers. For more on wacky facial ingredients, check out what I wrote here. Also this. (Via TheHairpin)

Pretty Price Check (01.21.11)

Liquid Money Perfume

Some weeks I go for nuance. Or considered analysis.

But I’m just going to say it: Today’s entire Price Check is brought to you by the Department of We’ve Lost the Plot. Because it’s a nail polish economy, kittens. And we’re just living in it.

  • $35: What it costs to smell like Liquid Money, as in, this new perfume that smells like cash. “But money usually smells like BO!” writes The Hairpin’s Liz Colville. “WTF! And other exclamations about how silly this is.” Except I’m kinda digging a fragrance that doesn’t pretend to smell like your favorite celebrity’s butterfly kisses or kittens in a rainstorm or whatever the f*ck else they come up with for these beauty products that don’t even attempt to do anything to alter your physical appearance. And nevertheless market themselves as an indispensable part of your beauty routine. Fragrance is profit in a (toxic) bottle. ‘Nuff said. (Via AOL News)

Amy Palanjian Homemade Makeup on Better TV

Well look at that! It’s a screen grab (because I can’t figure out how to bring the video over) of my best friend Amy Palanjian (deputy editor of ReadyMade Magazine, wearer of my purple dress) demonstrating how to make your own makeup over on Better.tv. I am especially excited about the beet root lip gloss, which, btw, she learned from our pals, the No More Dirty Looks ladies, who recently shared their DIY tips in the mag.

So go watch the video and learn stuff. (Maybe 2011 will be year I get over my DIY Beauty Product Fear… ) Then come on back, because we’ve got LOTS to Price Check today: Read more…
