[Inside the Pink Pyramid] CBSNews.com MoneyWatch Interview

I did a really interesting interview this week with Amy Levin-Epstein, who writes for CBS MoneyWatch. We talked about why Mary Kay is so appealing to so many women, especially right now in the midst of our recession, which may actually be a mom-cession (so much for all that he-cession talk?).

Here’s part of what I told MoneyWatch.

The company’s founder, Mary Kay Ash, knew exactly why women were frustrated in the 1960s: the lack of gender equality, which meant they were dependent on their husband’s income and unable to make much headway in the workplace. But she also knew that a significant majority of women weren’t responding to the hardcore feminist revolution that say, Betty Friedan was advocating in “The Feminist Mystique.”

  • 71 percent of women feel fat, according to a new Glamour Magazine survey.
  • Only 46 percent of those women are actually overweight, says the same survey. Which makes me sad, because yet again, we’re reminded how distorted the average woman’s body image is. But I also don’t like how the media coverage on these two stats is framing the other 25 percent: Does being legitimately bigger (in the eyes of Glamour, mind you) mean it’s somehow okay that they’re feeling bad about it?   • 78 percent of frequent tanners say they’ve tried to cut down but can’t — and feel guilty about it, according to a new study that bolsters the not new theory that tanning can be addictive. I think we knew this, but clearly, still disturbing. (Via Mother Jones.)
