Body Image Warrior Week: Me!

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

For my contribution to BIWW (why did I just now, on the final post, realize I could have been acronym-ing that all week? Sigh!) I decided to write an update of this old post. I’m kind of sentimental about that piece because it was pretty much the first time — after almost a year of blogging five times a week — I  wrote about my own body and my own body image struggles. And it was a lot to put out into the world. Especially if you’re not naturally a no boundaries kind of blogger. But it turned out to be hugely liberating and — judging by your comments anyway — kinda helpful.

So I updated the piece and am reposting it here — not because I’m in the same place as I was when I first wrote it in October 2010. I’m so not. But because our bodies are still our bodies. They are always changing. And always the same.

Body Image Warrior Week: Sally McGraw of Already Pretty

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

And now we have Sally McGraw, the genius behind this entire Body Image Warrior Week party. I adore Sally’s blog because she takes very practical concepts — like knowing your tailoring measurements — and figures out how to make them empowering. Also, she does this great Insomniac Sale Picks series where she finds great deals on impossible-to-find wardrobe items. Rad.

Anyway, I am just tickled that Sally asked me to participate in Body Image Warrior Week and similarly pumped to now bring you Sally!

Body Image Warrior Week: Kate Fridkis of Eat The Damn Cake

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

Happy Friday! It’s the last day of Body Image Warrior Week, so I’ll be bringing you the last three posts throughout the day. I hope you’re enjoying this onslaught of body image goodness. As much as I appreciate y’all stopping by to hear me yammer on (and I’ll be yammering on later on today!), it’s been so fantastic to have all of these other amazing writers guest posting and thought-provoking all week long.

First up today is my girl Kate of Eat the Damn Cake. Kate was one of my first blogger friends and she’s visited us round these parts before. (Oh and on Never Say Diet, too!) So she really needs no introduction. She’s just awesome.

Body Image Warrior Week: Mara Glatzel of Medicinal Marzipan

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

The last Body Image Warrior for today is Mara Glatzel who writes the blog Medicinal Marzipan. This essay tackles an important question that sometimes gets ignored in all of our big talk about body image and acceptance: What happens when “love your body” feels way too out of reach? Mara proposes another idea — body neutrality — which seems like a pretty good place to start if full on body love feels too hard and overwhelming.

Body Image Warrior Week: Elissa Stern of Dress With Courage

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

When you read how Elissa Stern of Dress With Courage feels about her stomach, you’ll know why I am maybe over-relating to her work right now. I also enjoy that she describes herself as a “Fashion blogger, freelance writer, vintage enthusiast, thrifter and cheapskate.” Yes. All such good things to be.

Body Image Warrior Week: Rosie Molinary

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

Rosie Molinary is another new-to-me writer (she’s not all new — she’s written several books — I am just filling a lot of gaps in my body image knowledge this week!) and I’m loving that she found inspiration in a Nike ad, of all places. And then took it way beyond where the good people at Nike might have expected.

Body Image Warrior Week: DeeDee Robinson of Decoding Dress

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

I’ll admit it: In the past, I’ve been a little snooty about fashion blogs. See also: My Pinterest angst. See also: I’m a giant hypocrite on both fronts (because I love fashion blogs and Pinterest). And: I was just plain wrong. DeeDee Robinson, who writes Decoding Dress, would be one of the bloggers who set me straight on that. She posts outfits and she writes about why we wear what we wear. And she is so smart.

Body Image Warrior Week: Caitlin Constantine of Fit & Feminist

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

I discovered Caitlin Constantine of Fit and Feminist via Monday’s Body Image Warrior Autumn, (see how this blogging community thing works? love!) and was immediately hooked because Caitlin’s take on all things body is, in fact, fit and feminist. That might sound simple but it so isn’t. In many ways, “fit” has become the new “skinny,” as in, yet another unachievable beauty ideal. Caitlin has no interest in that. She’s all about fitness as a way to realize your own personal power — which means recognizing when those beauty standards are getting in the way. (See this awesome post on why the scale is our new glass ceiling for the case in point.)

Body Image Warrior Week: Margarita Tartakovsky of Weightless

This afternoon, I bring you Margarita Tartakovsky. Over on her blog Weightless, you’ll find thought-provoking interviews with psychologists, researchers and other folks out on the front lines of ED recovery and treatment, as well as beautifully-written inspiration and advice. This essay would be a lovely example of the latter.

Body Image Warrior Week: Patti Gibbons of Not Dead Yet Style

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

Body Image Warrior Week via AlreadyPretty

Today’s Body Image Warrior is Patti Gibbons of Not Dead Yet Style. This is one Warrior whose blog is new-to-me this week and I’m so delighted to discover it, mostly because in her blog bio, Patti says, “we are not dead yet, let’s enjoy every sandwich.” Yes. I love sandwiches. Oh, she’s also a self-described “crazy cat lady,” and ummm, I can relate.

Anyway, today Patti is debunking one of the biggest Beauty Myths of them all: Your Body and Problem Areas.
